Statistical socio-political data presented in a novel and visually striking way, illustrating how diverseness creates balance and richness in our society. An exhibition at Pennings Foundation during Dutch Design Week; from 18 to 26 October and continuing until 22 November.
In the past, studio mo man tai has also visualised datasets in an experimental way – always colourful and always starting with a positive approach. This new installation, also using leftover material, presents a current socio-political theme in an unexpected and visually spectacular way. A simulated parture with over 8,800 flowers to visualise the diversity of the Dutch population.
Very often important issues in and for our community are losing urgency and gravity through repeated, bland communication… certain topics are knowingly misrepresented to support or ‘prove’ a cause or conviction. The designers at studio mo man tai are convinced that by visualizing these subjects in a new, totally different and surprising way, the renewed attention may make a difference and pique the curiosity and interest again. Because of the uncertain, chaotic times we live in the intentional visual lightness will offset and contrast with the earnestness and it is that combination which makes the installation so effective.
The definition of diverseness is ‘the quality or state of being composed of many different elements or types’. The beauty of the diverseness of our community is symbolized through a large field of flowers where each type of flower statistically represents a distinct group of people living in the Netherlands.
The visitor enters a theatrically lit space and will be taken off guard by the large pixelated colourfull surface and massive amount of reflections all around created by over 8800 handmade flowers. Typically visitors will first take pictures, selfies…etc and only in second instance or when entering in a conversation realize there is a second layer…
It is that different perspective, that brief moment of realisation through that other way of presenting data that studio mo man tai believes will stimulate the conversations, put the data ‘in perspective’ and provide new insights based on correct information.
Leftover acrylic mirror material, often discarded as waste, is transformed into a captivating visual experience through creative reuse. The reflective sheets are precisely laser-cut into a variety of organic and geometric shapes, arranged for maximizing the use of the available surface and to minimize material waste. These mirrored fragments are then carefully assembled by hand into intricate flower-like forms, each unique in structure and light play. When arranged together in a meadow-like setting and illuminated by a few strategically placed spotlights, the installation comes to life — radiating a mesmerizing array of reflections and sparkles. Each mirror petal catches and scatters the light, producing a dynamic interplay of glimmers that dance across surrounding surfaces. The overall effect is immersive and ethereal, turning simple recycled material into a spectacle of light and form. This work not only highlights the potential of upcycled design but also explores the relationship between light, reflection, and handcrafted beauty, offering viewers a poetic confrontation with sustainability and creativity.
The whole installation is build up from 175 numbered boxes; each containing 50 flowers, representing the statistical cross-section of the Dutch population – based on CBS data from 2024. Each box comes with a certificate of authenticity with some additional information. After the exhibition at Pennings Foundation; end of November, an exclusive selection of boxed sets will be for sale at the museum shop of the Fenix museum in Rotterdam. Fenix is the new art museum dedicated to migration. Located in a historic harbour warehouse on Rotterdam’s quays of departure and arrival, Fenix showcases countless migration stories—of love and farewell, of homecoming and belonging. Stories from the past and present, told by over a hundred artists from all over the world. A maze of suitcases sharing personal memories. Documentary photography taking you on a journey. Kitchens that have travelled across the globe. A public square, open to all. An exclusive selection of the displayed ‘flowers’ from the installation will be available for purchase in the Fenix museum shop after the exhibition.

In het verleden heeft studio mo man tai ook al datasets op experimentele wijze gevisualiseerd – altijd kleurrijk en altijd vanuit een positieve benadering. Deze nieuwe installatie; ook gebruikmakend van restmateriaal, presenteert een actueel socio-politiek thema op een onverwachte en visueel spectaculaire manier. Een gesimuleerde weide met ruim 8800 bloemen om de Nederlandse bevolkingsdiversiteit te visualiseren.
Vaak verliezen belangrijke kwesties in en voor onze gemeenschap hun urgentie en ernst door herhaalde, saaie en voorspelbare communicatie… bepaalde onderwerpen worden zelfs bewust verkeerd voorgesteld om een zaak of overtuiging te ondersteunen of te ‘bewijzen’. De ontwerpers van studio mo man tai zijn ervan overtuigd dat door deze onderwerpen op een nieuwe, totaal andere en verrassende manier te visualiseren, de hernieuwde aandacht een verschil kan maken en de nieuwsgierigheid en interesse weer kan prikkelen. Vanwege de onzekere, chaotische tijden waarin we leven, vormt de gekozen visuele lichtheid een tegenwicht voor en contrast met de relatieve ernst van het thema, en het is juist die combinatie die de installatie zo effectief maakt.
De definitie van ‘diverseness’ is ‘de eigenschap of toestand van het uit vele verschillende elementen of soorten bestaan’. De schoonheid van de bevolkingsdiversiteit wordt gesymboliseerd door een groot bloemenveld, waarbij elke bloemsoort statistisch gezien een groep mensen met specifieke afkomst vertegenwoordigt die in Nederland woont.
De bezoeker komt binnen in een theatraal verlichte ruimte en wordt verrast door een heel groot; kleurrijke oppervlak met stukjes spiegel en de enorme hoeveelheid reflecties rondom, gecreëerd door meer dan 8800 handgemaakte bloemen. Typisch zullen Bezoekers zullen eerst foto’s, selfies enz. maken en pas in tweede instantie of wanneer ze een gesprek aangaan, beseffen dat er een tweede laag is…
Het is dat andere perspectief, dat korte moment van besef door die nieuwe manier van gegevens presenteren, waarvan studio mo man tai gelooft dat het de gesprekken zal stimuleren, de gegevens ‘in perspectief’ zal plaatsen en nieuwe inzichten zal bieden op basis van statistisch correcte informatie.
Resten van acrylaat spiegelmateriaal, te klein en vaak als afval weggegooid, wordt door creatief hergebruik omgezet in een boeiende visuele ervaring. De stukken reflecterende kunststof worden met een laser nauwkeurig in verschillende organische en geometrische vormen gesneden en zo gerangschikt dat het beschikbare oppervlak maximaal wordt benut en er uiteindelijk zo min mogelijk materiaal overblijft. Deze spiegelende fragmenten worden vervolgens zorgvuldig met de hand samengesteld tot bloemachtige vormen, die elk uniek zijn qua structuur en lichtspel. Na samen gerangschikt te zijn in een soort weide en verlicht met een paar strategisch geplaatste spots, komt de installatie tot leven en straalt in betoverende reflecties en schitteringen. Elk spiegelend bloemblad vangt en weerspiegelt het licht, waardoor een dynamisch samenspel van glinsteringen ontstaat dat op de omringende oppervlakken danst. Het totale effect is meeslepend en etherisch en het werk benadrukt niet alleen het potentieel van upcycled design, maar onderzoekt ook de relatie tussen licht, reflectie en handgemaakte objecten, waardoor de toeschouwer op poëtische wijze ook wordt geconfronteerd met duurzaamheid en creativiteit
De hele installatie bestaat uit 175 genummerde dozen; elke set bevat 50 bloemen die een statistische dwarsdoorsnede van de Nederlandse bevolking vertegenwoordigen, gebaseerd op gegevens van het CBS uit 2024. Elke doos wordt geleverd met een echtheidscertificaat met aanvullende informatie. Na de tentoonstelling bij Pennings Foundation eind november zal een exclusieve selectie van box-sets te koop zijn in de museumwinkel van het Fenix Museum in Rotterdam. Fenix geeft ruimte aan talloze migratieverhalen. Over liefde en afscheid, over thuiskomen en je thuis voelen. Verhalen van toen en nu. Verteld door meer dan honderd kunstenaars, uit alle continenten. Met een doolhof van koffers waaruit verhalen klinken. Met documentairefotografie die je meeneemt op reis. Met keukens die de wereld over reisden. Met een vrij toegankelijk Plein. Een exclusieve selectie van de getoonde ‘bloemen’ uit de installatie is na afloop van de tentoonstelling te koop in de museumshop van Fenix.
Het presentatie- en kennisplatform in Eindhoven op het gebied van fotografie en video (lens-based media) en is zo betekenisvol voor kunstenaars en publiek. Met hoogwaardige tentoonstellingen wordt laagdrempelig een breed en divers publiek in staat gesteld kunst te beleven en te waarderen en worden ontmoetingen bevorderd tussen makers, publiek en opdrachtgevers.
