Inspired by traditional quilting techniques, Quilted Mirror Objects series combines shape, colour and reflections to create remarkable interior objects. The collection transforms left-over acrylic mirror material into graphic compositions, emphasising the beauty of imperfection and reuse.
The first installment of this bold new collection was presented at 5Vie during Milan Design Week 2025. With a playful sensibility and a commitment to eco-conscious design, studio mo man tai transforms leftover pieces of acrylic mirror material into dynamic, geometrically composed furniture pieces—ranging from tables, benches and stools to mirrors and pedestal.
With Quilted Mirror Objects, part of the “Basic Instinct: Beauty and Symbiosis as a Necessity” presentation at the Kazerne, mo man tai invites viewers to rethink the relationship between ‘waste’ and beauty. For this project, they are collaborating with Pyrasied, which specialises in environmentally friendly plastics, giving leftover pieces of acrylic mirror a second life. The resulting pieces are not just functional objects—they are joyful statements that celebrate reflection, color, and the transformative power of sustainable craftsmanship.
This new release also celebrates a significant milestone: the studio’s 25th anniversary of crafting bold, colour- and playful and sustainable design. Especially for the presentation during Dutch Design Week studio mo man tai created interior objects in a different daring colour way, in dialogue with other works presented at the Kazerne.
Next to the Quilted Mirror Objects as part of “Basic Instinct: Making-With” mo man tai also presents 6 large flower arrangements in the restaurant of Kazerne. Using even smaller leftover pieces of acrylic the grand bouquets, containing close to 300 handmade flowers each, purposely illustrate the proposition: “Humanity’s fascination with sparkle — from beads and baubles to glossy surfaces — is as old as civilisation itself.”
Sustainable entrepreneurship is the only right way to do business for Pyrasied. In their view, there is only one path to a sustainable future, and that is circular production. Even after 40 years, acrylic is still in excellent condition; it is sustainable because it lasts a long time and retains its qualitative appearance. The fact that it is also fully recyclable and can serve as the basis for new projects makes it even more sustainable. Pyrasied supplies all the leftover materials that mo man tai processes.

Speciaal voor de presentatie tijdens Dutch Design Week heeft studio mo man tai nieuwe objecten ontworpen in een aangepaste kleurstelling, in dialoog met andere werken die in de Kazerne worden gepresenteerd.
Met Quilted Mirror Objects, deel van de “Basic Instinct: Making-With” presentatie in de Kazerne, nodigt studio mo man tai kijkers uit om de relatie tussen ‘afval’ en schoonheid te heroverwegen. Voor dit project werken ze samen met Pyrasied, dat gespecialiseerd is in milieuvriendelijke kunststoffen, waardoor restanten van acrylaat spiegels een tweede leven krijgen.
De resulterende stukken zijn niet alleen functionele objecten, het zijn ook vrolijke statements die reflectie, kleur en de transformerende kracht van duurzaam vakmanschap vieren.

Naast de Quilted Mirror Objects als onderdeel van “Basic Instinct: Making-With” presenteert mo man tai ook 6 grote bloemstukken in het restaurant van Kazerne. Met behulp van nog kleinere resten acrylaat illustreren de grote boeketten, die elk bijna 300 handgemaakte bloemen bevatten, de stelling: “De menselijke fascinatie voor ‘kralen en snuisterijen’ – de glans van schoonheid – is zo oud als de beschaving.”
Voor Pyrasied is duurzaam ondernemen de enige juiste manier van ondernemen. In hun optiek is er dan ook maar één weg richting een duurzame toekomst en dat is de weg van circulaire productie. Acrylaat als materiaal is ook na 40 jaar nog steeds in prima staat; het is duurzaam omdat het lang meegaat én lang mooi blijft. Dat het ook volledig te recyclen is en weer als basis kan dienen voor nieuwe projecten maakt het allemaal nóg duurzamer. Pyrasied levert alle restmaterialen die mo man tai verwerkt.
