Een bekende Nederlandse uitdrukking vertaald met 3D-betonprinten.
In deze onzekere en chaotische tijden is er een groeiende behoefte aan geruststelling, aan ongecompliceerde en vriendelijke concepten… aan ‘lichtheid’ (en plezier). Wat als antiterrorisme-obstakels zouden kunnen worden omgevormd tot aantrekkelijke, uitnodigende objecten…
Iedereen kent en herkent ze inmiddels – grote betonblokken die op drukke plekken worden geplaatst ter bescherming tegen mogelijke terroristische aanslagen; ze voorkomen dat auto’s of kleine vrachtwagens toegang hebben tot openbare ruimtes of plekken met veel publiek. Een betonblok is een zichtbare barrière, een opvallend obstakel waarachter je je veilig voelt.
Wat als antiterrorisme barrières een nieuwe look krijgen? Waarom zouden we ze niet omvormen tot een aantrekkelijk en leuk object waar mensen zelfs op kunnen zitten, klimmen en spelen?
Studio mo man tai experimenteert al jaren met de grenzen van (nog) “printbare” vormen bij het 3D-betonprinten. “Met ons project ‘Beren op de weg’, een bekende Nederlandse uitdrukking, tillen we dit naar een nieuw ‘level’ door verplaatsbare, organisch gevormde betonnen objecten te creëren.”
De eerste liggende beer werd gepresenteerd tijdens Dutch Design Week, lokaal 3D-geprint bij Weber Beamix op “De Hurk” in Eindhoven. Er waren exemplaren op verschillende locaties in en rond de stad; – op het 18 Septemberplein (aan de kant van het station), bij/voor Domusdela (Kanaalstraat 4) en bij Sectie-C (Daalakkersweg 2 t/m 14).
Als deel van de Wandelroute op de Hurk zijn er na DDW twee van de beren langs de Hurksestraat geplaatst.

Saint-Gobain Weber experimenteert al met het 3D-printen van beton sinds het begin van deze eeuw en opende in 2019 in Eindhoven (NL) de eerste commerciële 3D betonprintfabriek in Europa…. aan de overkant van de straat bij onze studio. De eerste kenninsmakingsgesprekken werden al snel project voorstellen… and the rest – as they say – is ‘history’. Na de eerste skate ramps in 2019 volgde ‘n volledig skatepark… en deze ‘beren op de weg’ zijn een volgend gezamelijk project.

…a well-known Dutch expression – meaning ‘(seeing) bears on the road’ – interpreted through 3D concrete printing.
Everyone knows them – boring concrete blocks to safeguard pedestrians at public events. The fear of terrorism, given the various attacks in Maagdenburg, New Orleans and Munchen is real and therefore, almost everyone welcomes protective measures.
Much attention is given to protecting crowds, guiding nightlife and – generally – large groups of people at a publicly accessible events. The awareness that a passenger car can also be a murder weapon is not necesarily top of mind but at the same time, no one is questioning the measures (when taken).
A concrete block is a visible/recognisable barrier, a conspicuous obstacle behind which you feel safe. Politicians are positive: they can very physically show that a human life matters to them. A pompous concrete block as a symbol for the government taking care of its citizens.
But what if an anti-terrorism obstacles gets a new/different look? Why not transform it into an attractive object that even invites people to sit, lie, climb and play on it?
For years, studio mo man tai has been experimenting and exploring the limits of “printable” forms in 3D concrete printing (3DCP). “With our project “beren op de weg” we will take it to a new level by creating organic shaped concrete pieces.”
A first batch of bears was printed by 3D.Weber located at the industry area “De Hurk”. These “beren op de weg” were presented during Dutch Design Week 2025 at different locations across Eindhoven – at the 18 Septemberplein (on the side of the train station), outside at Domusdela (Kanaalstraat 4) and at Sectie-C (Daalakkersweg 2 t/m 14).
As part of the Walking Route on ‘De Hurk’, two of the bears were placed along the Hurksestraat after DDW.
Saint-Gobain Weber has been developing 3D concrete printing since the beginning of this century and opened Europe’s first commercial 3D concrete printing factory in Eindhoven (NL) in 2019… across the road from our studio. The intial conversations quickly turned into project proposals and the rest is history… After some first skate ramps in 2019, we’ve cooperated last year on a ‘pop up’ skatepark during the Olympics in Paris.
