Many polar bears fail to get from their winter home in Spitsbergen to their summer home on the Arctic pack ice. Due to global warming, the ice around the islands is melting earlier in the season than before. As a result, the polar bears cannot reach their normal prey and instead rely on other food such as garbage, eggs and carrion. This often leads to starvation and death.
